Clear Reagent Sulfuric Acid Liquid 80 Percent ACS Grade Lower Viscosity
Reagent Sulfuric Acid 80% is a high-purity acid with a precisely controlled concentration that balances strong acidity with reduced dehydrating and oxidizing power compared to 96–98% grades. Its lower viscosity and moderate reactivity make it suitable for applications where aggressive charring or excessive heat generation is undesirable. It is supplied to meet ACS or equivalent specifications for trace impurities.
- Dilute Acid Preparation: Convenient stock solution for accurately preparing 1 M, 0.5 M, or other dilute sulfuric acid solutions without the intense heat and spattering associated with diluting 98% acid.
- COD Digestion: Used in specific Chemical Oxygen Demand methods where a defined acid concentration is required for consistent oxidation conditions.
- pH Adjustment: Provides controlled acidity for sample preservation, buffer preparation, and maintaining required pH in analytical procedures.
- Ion Exchange Resin Regeneration: Dilute sulfuric acid (around 5–10%) is commonly used to regenerate cation exchange resins; 80% reagent acid can be easily diluted on-site for this purpose while ensuring minimal heavy metal contamination.
- Mild Catalysis: Used in reactions sensitive to water activity where concentrated acid would cause unwanted dehydration or polymerization. The 20% water content moderates reactivity.
- Hydrolysis Reactions: Promotes hydrolysis of esters, amides, or nitriles under milder, more controllable conditions than 98% acid, reducing the risk of over-oxidation or charring of sensitive substrates.
- Cleavage Reactions: Applied in solid-phase peptide synthesis and other deprotection steps where a specific acid concentration is required for selective removal of protecting groups.
- Sample Acidification: Acidifies water samples for nutrient (ammonia, nitrate, phosphate) and trace metal preservation prior to analysis; 80% acid is easier to handle and measure accurately in the field or lab.
- TOC and TIC Analysis: Used in some total organic carbon analyzers that require a specific acid strength to reliably remove inorganic carbon without damaging instrument components.
- Desiccant Regeneration: Can be employed to regenerate silica gel and other drying agents when a slightly diluted acid is preferred.
- Cleaning Solution Component: Used in the preparation of milder laboratory cleaning solutions for glassware and apparatus, especially when residues may be sensitive to highly concentrated acid.
